Trichocereus peruvianus (Huancabamba, Peru) – (also : Echinopsis peruvianus)

(also : Peruvian Torch)

Long columnar Cacti which can grow up to 6 metres high and 15 centimetres thick. The stem has four to nine rounded ribs with on it big areoles with brown wool or felt. Above each areole, a V-shaped indentation is placed. three to ten brown coloured thorns (spines) grow out of each areole. The longest central spines reach a maximum length of ten centimetres.

This Peruvian Torch is a special form found in the area of Huancabamba in Peru which is considered to be a sacred place. Huancabamba is known for its high quality of San Pedro Cacti.

Effects

Mescaline is the most potent mind-expanding compound found in Trichocereus bridgesii. It induces visual hallucinations, visions, sometimes with sounds. The trip is less strong than a Peyote trip. The maximal mescaline content of a fresh living cactus is 0,1 – 0,2 %. In dried specimens, the mescaline percentage amounts to 1 - 2 %.

Usage

Dry the cuttings horizontally for three weeks. Pot the cuttings (6-8 cm long) in dry normal potting-soil in a pot of measuring 7 cm in diameter. After two weeks, give a little water (1/3 to 1/4 part of the content of the pot). Repeat this until the cactus starts growing. Then, totally soak the pot with water every two weeks. After a few hours, throw away the water coming out underneath the pot. Add some special Cactus-fertilizer each month to ensure a better growth. Don't water in the winter months. There won’t be enough light for the cactus to grow in a healthy way. Instead it will grow smaller, weaker and longer.

If you are living in Western-Europe, don't water from October 1st to March 1st. In Southern-Europe, don't water from October 15 to February 15. Place the potted cactus in full sunshine, but do not let temperatures exceed 60 degrees Celsius (closed areas). Trichocereus peruvianusendure cold up to minus 10 degrees Celsius !
